Greetings from Mumbai, India!
As per India's Foreign Trade Policy issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), any person or company in India that wants to import or export any goods or services needs to have an IEC number (similar to the Federal Tax ID number in the US) without which, customs officials often impose penalties and fines on the importer or exporter who does not have this number at the time of import or export.
However persons importing or exporting goods for their personal use are exempted from having this number. DGFT has allocated a special number that can be used for all shippers and that number is 0100000053 (zero one followed by six zeros and ending in five three - total ten digit number). If you are asked to provide an IEC number at any time by any shipping company or NVOCC, please use the above number.
Thank you for taking the time to read this note. We strive to provide quality services to our customers. Your satisfaction is important to us and we welcome and value your feedback.
